BiPolar survey:

Knowing that you're likely to get into moods that are not fully rational, would you trust yourself to have your own gun in the house?

  1. It's not worth having a gun in your house anyway. who are your going to shoot? The intruder? he's probably a better shot. And it's probably your cousin coming home drunk.

  2. I don't mind guns, not afraid of them, know how to use them but I would definitely not have one in my house for the reason you mentioned. I don't think I would ever use it on myself, never been to that point (suppose it's possible) but I know my anger and rage when manic. I'm dangerous as it is when that happens, last thing I need is an additional tool.

  3. I've been asked a question:
"can I trust a Bipolar person and what he promises no matter his personality or so ? I mean will this condition affect their reliabilty?"
please everybody, give me as more answers as you can.
    thanks

  4. No.

A gun was a bad idea for my bipolar father. He had a tendency to stick it on my mother's head when he was manic. On his own head when he was depressed. Amazingly enough, they are still alive, which makes me think there might be such a thing as a miracle after all.

Unfortunately I'd be no more trustworthy with a gun than he was.

  5. @bipolarbear

I can't talk about those who are in treatment, but there is nothing more unreliable than an untreated bipolar person. At least not in my family.

  6. Have a gun in the house by all means - just don't have any ammo. Ever. I wouldn't dream of keeping a gun in the house because I'd blow my brains out the first chance I got, and if I was manic I'd be lucky if there was anyone left alive in South Wales. In terms of safety it'd be like asking a child with ADD to cook a hamburger with a blowtorch.

  7. I'm just not fond of guns at all, regardless of my state of mind. I do keep knives (outside of the kitchen variety), though, and I know how to throw them.

  11. Guns I have owned. Gun #1- stolen from house during a burglery. Two days later while laying in bed heard them coming back in thru the attic once again and knew this time they had MY gun. I ran. Gun #2 Ended up throwing the bullets in the field on more than one occasion because a boyfriend was getting way to stupid to have bullets in the house. Once again house was broke into and gun was stolen, was returned by police after being used in an armed robbery. Gun #3 - was also stolen and used in armed robbery. After it was returned by the police I found my sitting on the bathroom floor with it loaded on the floor next to me while I was SIing. After this my daughter was victimized and I spent a couple years trying to keep her alive when she did NOT want to be alive. Ummmmm NO guns in my house. Even tho I have had several years of therapy and feel confident that I wouldnt use it for any bad purposes and I no longer have suicidal family members in my house, the only purpose having a gun in my house has ever served is to supply criminals with weapons. I have decided not to do that anymore.

  12. I have a Bosch mini driver drill, a kitchen knife, a few pairs of scissors, two hand-hewn walking sticks, and a mason's trowel. Try breaking into my home with a gun and I'll swiftly get medieval on you. There's plenty of oil and I DO know how to boil it.

  13. I would NEVER, EVER own a gun because of my illnesses. I can't trust myself with alcohol let alone a fire arm.

It would be like giving a knife to a baby in my case. Or double-edged, razor sharp scalpel to a cutter.

If I had one in my house I would think about it constantly. Whenever things would be bad I'd say to myself, "Well, there's always that gun!!"

Besides I'm terrified of guns (which is good!!) I think I'd be more afraid that I'd kill someone else rather then me in a schizophrenic or manic episode. Or end up in some kind of murder suicide bullsh_t.

  14. I don't think its a good idea to have a gun at home when you're bipolar, we don't know what you might do or what might happen knowing you have a gun with you maybe esp when you have manic episodes. Just my two cents. I got here from the bipolar planet link list, I'm also a bipolar from Manila Philippines. Cheers!
